About Ticks

Ticks vary in color. They have four pairs of legs and no antennae. There are two groups of ticks, sometimes called the "hard" ticks and "soft" ticks. Hard ticks have a hard shield behind their mouth and when they are lacking food they form into the shape of a flat seed. Soft ticks do not have the hard shield and are shaped like a large raisin.

  • Size: About 1/8-inch to 5/8-inch in length.
  • Diet: Most ticks feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and reptiles. Ticks are not insects like fleas, they are arachnids like spiders, scorpions, and mites. Ticks need a meal containing blood after each stage of hatching. Some species are able to survive for years without feeding. Ticks are capable of spreading many diseases such as Lyme disease.
  • Habitat: Ticks are usually found near wooded or vegetated areas. They need an area with high humidity and a mix of animal species to feed off of.
